Things You Should Know When You Go To The Gym For The First Time

The first time at the gym can be an overwhelming experience. It will be busier than you’re used too, there will be lots of new equipment and people everywhere around you. Don’t worry though, as long as you come prepared and have an idea of what your workout should look like, it’s very likely that your first visit will be a success! Here are some tips that will help you have an enjoyable and safe first time experience:

1. Sign up for a free trial membership at the gym before paying for your membership. Most gyms offer free trials, so take advantage of this opportunity, especially if you’re new to going to the gym. You can get a feel of the facility before committing yourself to paying for a full membership. Also, try out different machines and see which ones you like best, as well as find out what your options are for classes and training sessions.

2. Bring someone with you on your first visit. Going to the gym is always easier with a friend or someone you know going along with you for moral support, not to mention giving you help with form or spotting if needed.

3. Before you head off to the gym I recommend reading a little bit about fitness and training theory. This isn’t essential because all gyms have trainers who can help out if needed but it will definitely help if you know a bit about how your body adapts to exercise.

4. You can treat your first day like a test run. Walk around the gym, get a feel for it, use a treadmill or elliptical trainer for 10 minutes, then stretch out.

5.Have someone take your picture before you start (a trainer or friend). This way if you don’t like what you see when you look in the mirror after working out, in the future, you’ll know exactly how far you’ve come!
