What Is A HIIT Workout? An Explanation and Some Simple Guidelines

HIIT can be a great weight-loss tool and is convenient because it requires very little equipment if any. It’s also a time-saver because you can get a full workout in just 20 to 30 minutes.

Many people think that HIIT is only for those who are already in good shape, but that isn’t true. If you’re new to exercise or have been sedentary for a while, start with low-intensity interval training (LIIT) instead. LIIT involves alternating bouts of moderate-intensity work and active rest, such as walking at an easy pace between bouts of faster walking. You can gradually increase the intensity over time as your fitness improves.

How it works:

HIIT is a workout that combines short bursts of high-intensity cardio with less intense recovery periods. The goal is to switch up the speed your heart beats so that it spends time in lower-intensity zones as well as higher zones. By doing this, you burn more calories while also giving your body a chance to recover. HIIT workouts alternate between bursts of maximum-effort exercise and brief periods of rest or lower-intensity exercise. This cycle repeats throughout the workout.

The number of cycles per workout depends on the length of each cycle and the total duration you want your workout to be. For example, if you want your total workout time to be 30 minutes long and your cycle length is 60 seconds long, you’ll do 30 rounds.
