Doctors usually recommend plenty of ways to prevent dementia from installing in a person’s brain. Having a balanced life, regularly working out, solving puzzle games daily, and so on. There are plenty of methods, and while we’re not here to contradict the doctors, they may consider one unique method for fighting the condition.

That method is simply playing video games, at least when it comes to older adults. A recent study that BestLifeOnline.com speaks about backs up the method.

Play video games 30 minutes per day to prevent dementia

Participants of ages between 60 and 80 years old were analyzed for a study to see how 3D games could be affecting their cognitive abilities and memory. For four weeks, these individuals had been playing video games for 30 to 45 minutes every day. During this time and after the gameplay itself, memory tests of the participants were conducted.

The outcome was that after two weeks of playing Angry Birds and Super Mario, the cognition of the participants assigned for the famous games was improved.

It was also found that compared to those assigned to play the famous card game Solitaire, the ones who were playing Super Mario had seen additional improvements for the cognition area, as well as for memory function over the next two weeks.

An official statement from the authors of the study says, as quoted by BestLifeOnline.com:

Here, we replicated our previous video game study in healthy older adults, showing that playing video games for four weeks can improve hippocampal-based memory in a population that is already experiencing age-related decline in memory.

The authors also wrote, as cited by the same source:

Furthermore, we showed that the improvements last for up to four weeks past the intervention, highlighting the potential of video games as an intervention for age-related cognitive decline.
