Google Pixel Fold vs Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 4: Which One is Better?

Source: Samsung

In 2023, Google will hop into the ‘folding smartphone’ business thanks to its upcoming Pixel Fold device. There’s not much to learn about the gadget from official sources at this point, but still, leaks and rumors give us plenty of reasons to expect a powerful phone.

On the other side, Samsung is one of those companies that have an impressive series of foldable phones, which is known as the Galaxy Z Fold. The latest Galaxy Z Fold 4 is arguably the best foldable device of the South Korean tech giant, and it was released this year in August.

Let’s make a quick comparison between Google Pixel Fold and Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 4, based on what we know for sure about the latter and what’s expected in the case of the former:

Display

Google Pixel Fold is expected to have a display of 120Hz for the refresh rate. That’s not bad at all, but it’s also not over the top. Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 4 also has a 120Hz display, which means that the two phones are pretty much equal in this area. The refresh rate is arguably the most important part of a smartphone’s display.

Since we’re talking about a foldable device, we can surely expect Galaxy Fold to have a large display as well. The one mounted on Samsung’s device features 7.6 inches.

The brightness of the Google Pixel Fold’s display is expected to be set at 1200 nits. That’s the same level of maximum brightness that the Galaxy Z Fold 4 is also capable of. Therefore, we don’t have a clear winner when it comes to the display of the two phones.

Cameras

Google Pixel Fold should win this round based on the info we have. Google’s upcoming device will likely be featuring a triple-camera module that carries an IMX787 main sensor of 64MP. There is also expected a 12MP IMX386 ultrawide secondary sensor and a 10.8MP S5K3J1 telephoto lens.

The main camera of the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 4 is still competitive but a bit lower in specs: the gadget carries a triple camera setup consisting of a main wide snapper of 50MP. The other two lenses are a telephoto lens of 10MP and an ultrawide lens of 12MP.

Processor

Google will likely still use one of its own processors on the upcoming Pixel Fold, just as the tech giant did in the case of the new Pixel 7 flagships. Therefore, we can expect the Google Pixel Fold to be sporting the Tensor G2 SoC. However, it’s also possible to see a third-generation Tensor SoC.

Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 4 is equipped with a Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1 processor, meaning the most powerful smartphone chipset that Qualcomm ever made. This means that it will obviously be very difficult for Google Pixel Fold to bring something better, but not impossible. For the moment, the win goes to Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 4.

It’s pretty much useless to have a phone with lots of GB of RAM and storage if you don’t also have a processor that’s potent enough, and that will certainly not be the case with the Google Pixel Fold!

Price

Since we’re talking about a flagship, it would be absurd for Google Pixel Fold not to cost an arm and a leg. We can expect the device to be priced somewhere between $1,499 and $1,799. Instead, if you want to have a Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 4 in your pocket, you’ll have to spend around $1,269. If the information is correct, this means that the Google Pixel Fold will be at least about $200 more expensive.

Surely there is a lot more to find out about what Google has in store for the world when it comes to its upcoming Pixel Fold, but at this point, buying Samsung’s gadget seems like the better deal.
