WhatsApp May Soon Allow Users to Silence Calls from Unknown Numbers

Reportedly, WhatsApp is developing a new function that would allow its users to block calls from unknown numbers. A feature to automatically mute calls from unknown numbers is reportedly in the works for the Android beta version of WhatsApp. All incoming calls will be recorded and shown in the user’s call history and notifications without ever alerting or disturbing them.

WABetaInfo, a site that routinely investigates beta versions of WhatsApp, found the feature. According to the website, this function might block solicitors from evading the platform’s safeguards and protect users from receiving unsolicited phone calls. A user can look up the number of an unknown caller and respond by phone or text message.

Beta testers have discovered the feature, but it is not yet available to users. The feature may never be made accessible, or it may undergo significant changes before being made available to the public. There is no assurance that it will be included in the final build, as is the case with any feature in development.

In a world where WhatsApp is among the most widely used messaging apps, this new function could prove to be an invaluable asset. The site’s approximately two billion monthly visitors make them an easy target for spammers and scammers. There are already various safeguards in place on WhatsApp to avoid spam, but this new feature has the potential to make the service even more foolproof and user-friendly.

Overall, if the function is implemented, it could provide an additional safeguard for WhatsApp users against spam calls. Those who are routinely contacted by solicitors or telemarketers would benefit greatly from this function. WhatsApp users have a lot to look forward to, even if it is unclear when or if the functionality will be released.
