A Movie Is Filmed Into Space For The First Time

After staying 12 days onboard the International Space Station, a Russian film crew returned safely on Earth last week. They finished filming the first feature-length drama consisting of spatially shot sequences.

The 12-day voyage, which was supported by Roscosmos Space Agency in Russia, was the newest event in a spacesports competition to thrill the audiences about human space flights and show that places such as the space station are not only for government personnel. The expedition also added to Russia’s record in spaceflights over the USA another achievement: beating Hollywood when it comes to space movies.

The film crew landed successfully back on Earth. Helicopters from research and rescue teams circulated in the vicinity of the astronauts. There was a broadcast with live footage by the Russian space agency, and command center teams encouraged the group to “get ready” and prepare for arrival. The capsule landed safely with a big parachute and generated a dust cloud.

The expedition did have some incidents after a thruster firing test went wrong. However, the situation was quickly brought under control:

“Within 30 minutes, flight controllers regained attitude control of the space station, which is now in a stable configuration. The crew was awake at the time of the event and was not in any danger,” NASA announced.

The film tells the narrative of a surgeon, who must operate an unwell astronaut in space since the health state of the astronaut forbids him from going back to Earth to be cured.

Tom Cruise and Elon Musk’s SpaceX are also planning to film an action movie in space. The plans were announced last year but we did not receive any updates since. Back then, President Donald Trump also confirmed the plans for this movie. It remains to see whether we’ll hear anything about this project soon.
