Latest iOS 16.3.1 Update Causes Google Photos to Break

Apple recently released the latest update for compatible iPhones with iOS 16.3.1, which is intended to bring stability improvements and bug fixes. However, it appears that the update is causing issues for Google Photos users. After downloading the new iOS update, Google Photos no longer opens and instantly crashes. This has been confirmed by multiple sources, including some reports from The Verge. If you haven’t downloaded the latest update, it may be wise to hold off until the issue is resolved.

While iOS 16.3.1 is a minor update that does not introduce new customer-facing features, it does provide significant bug fixes and stability updates. The update addresses problems such as unresponsive or incorrect iCloud settings when apps are using iCloud and Siri requests for Find My not working. Additionally, the update introduces optimizations for the Crash Detection feature on iPhone 14 and iPhone 14 Pro models.

Crash Detection has been a popular feature since its release, but it has also been causing some problems. Users across the US have been reporting false alarms when engaged in activities such as riding a rollercoaster or participating in winter sports. To minimize false detections, Apple has been collecting more data to improve the Crash Detection feature. While the latest update introduces optimizations to the feature, Apple has not shared how the feature has been improved. It remains to be seen how Crash Detection will react going forward.

While it’s frustrating to encounter problems with updates, it’s important to note that updates are necessary to maintain the security and functionality of our devices. It’s always a good idea to keep our devices up-to-date to ensure we are protected from security threats and other issues. In the meantime, if you rely heavily on Google Photos, it may be best to hold off on downloading the latest update until the issue is resolved.
