The gaming industry has seen a massive surge in popularity in recent years, with the global market expected to reach a value of $200 billion by 2023. While most of the focus has been on console and PC gaming, there is a growing need for new gaming handheld devices that can cater to gamers on the go.

In the past, handheld gaming consoles like the Nintendo Game Boy and the Sony PlayStation Portable were incredibly popular among gamers. However, with the rise of smartphones and tablets, these devices have lost their relevance in the market. Many gamers now prefer to play games on their smartphones rather than carry around a separate handheld console.

ASUS ROG Ally is one hell of a handheld gaming console

ASUS has revealed new details about its handheld gaming device, the ROG Ally, and Notebookcheck brings details about the product’s capabilities. The device will feature a 120 Hz display and a custom AMD Ryzen APU based on Zen 4 and RDNA 3. The CPU core and GPU Compute Unit counts remain unknown at this stage. The ROG Ally is claimed to be up to two times faster than the Steam Deck and its custom AMD Aerith APU. However, The Phawx disputes this.

The ROG Ally will reach 20 dB in 15 W mode. It will have a 7-inch IPS display running at 1080p with a 16:9 aspect ratio, a fingerprint sensor, and a battery capacity that should be competitive with the Steam Deck. The device will not have hall-effect analog sticks or Thunderbolt 4 or USB4 connectivity, but it will have an ROG XG Mobile port that delivers PCIe Gen 3 x8 speeds. ASUS has not said when it will start selling the ROG Ally, and the pricing is still unknown.

New gaming handheld devices are essential for the future of mobile gaming. With the rise of cloud gaming and the growing demand for high-quality mobile gaming experiences, there is a significant opportunity for companies to create innovative devices that can cater to this demand. The gaming industry is constantly evolving, and the companies that can stay ahead of the curve by investing in new handheld devices will be the ones that succeed in the long run.
