It’s the End of the Road for the “Popcorn Time” Streaming Service

Despite being a very popular streaming service, Popcorn Time is finally facing its end. Despite the app’s huge notoriety, we all have to realize that it’s still considered a piracy app. Popcorn Time was working as snatching movies from torrent websites with the same ease as they’re accessed through a service like Netflix.

The news about Popcorn Time shutting down comes from Engadget.com. However, judging by how things unfolded over the years, we can’t be sure that the streaming service is gone for good. Shortly after the app’s launch in 2014, its developers abandoned the project. But since it was open-source, other people were eager to support the app. Popcorn Time has been through several “resurrections” until now, which means that we can’t rule out the possibility that it may happen again.

Not a piracy app?

A developer associated with Popcorn Time explained for Bloomberg several years ago why the app cannot be responsible for piracy. He augmented his claim by saying that the app doesn’t host any stolen material itself. Instead, what it was doing is to offer a link to computers hosting content via BitTorrent.

The man declared, as quoted by Bloomberg:

The torrent world was here with millions of users way before us and will be here with BILLIONS of users way after us.

There’s always the better alternative of purchasing a subscription for a streaming service such as Netflix, Amazon Prime Video, HBO Max, and a lot more. There’s countless material to watch – for instance, Netflix counts more than 15,000 titles. For a basic subscription to Netflix, the monthly cost is 7.99 euros. A Premium subscription is a little higher, but it’s definitely worth it: 11.99 euros.

However, we’re absolutely sure that none of our readers would ever download pirated content from the internet.
