Black Butler: Will The Anime Receive A Fourth Season?

Black Butler is an anime series that launched back in 2008, following the story of a young boy and his demon butler to whom he sold his soul. The demon will help the boy revenge the murder of his parents in exchange for his soul. The series had three entire seasons, two OVAs as well as a movie, and it led to the creation of the Nintendo DS game and three musicals. Moreover, the manga the series is based on continues to be highly popular. Since the success of Black Butler cannot be denied, many wonder whether there will be the fourth season for this anime series.

The issue with the Black Butler series is the parallel between the manga and the anime. For instance, the first season had 24 episodes, out of which only eight contained material from the manga. The ending was also anime only. The second season was more criticized because it added too much new content that was no in line with the canon source. Then, the third season managed to redeem the series by adapting a manga plotline.

However, the final season managed to switch up the timeline a bit. Season 3 takes place at the same time as events from episode 15 of season 1. Moreover, it was followed by an OVA and the movie, which also take place at a similar time. Since OVAs are rarely considered canon, it can be challenging to follow the story, as it expanded far beyond the actual anime series. Taking this into account, it appears a bit unlikely that there will ever be a fourth season of Black Butler. The good news is that the story continues in the manga, and fans can follow it there.
