WhatsApp is once again going through some interesting changes, which is nothing new at all. The developers are always looking to keep their roughly 2 billion customers as satisfied as possible.
According to WABetaInfo, WhatsApp is bringing a new camera interface, and it’s in the Android Beta version. We’re talking about the same camera interface that iOS users had already been using for a few months. Android users will get to see the media bar again.
The new camera interface of WhatsApp has started rolling out, meaning that it should be only a matter of time until you’ll see it working on your phone. If it’s not available now, don’t worry, as we anticipate that the rollout process might take a few weeks.
Despite WhatsApp’s huge success, being easily the most popular instant messaging app in the world, there are some voices claiming that things won’t look too good anymore in the future. For instance, Alex Stamos, meaning a former Facebook chief security officer, considers that WhatsApp users might soon go through “a privacy and security nightmare” due to the app possibly allowing text messages to become interoperable. This means that there won’t be any E2EE anymore.
Here’s what Alex Stamos declared, as quoted by The Verge:
How do you tell your phone who you want to talk to, and how does the phone find that person?
There is no way to allow for end-to-end encryption without trusting every provider to handle the identity management… If the goal is for all of the messaging systems to treat each other’s users exactly the same, then this is a privacy and security nightmare.
We’re eager to find out how WhatsApp’s new move will be perceived by the users, as we all know that the fanbase of the app is pretty hard to satisfy.
