You probably know that added sugars can damage your whole body. So, it shouldn’t come as a huge surprise that sugar can also be bad for your immune system.

A team of scientists from the Francis Clark Institute in London, the University of Bristol, and the Swansea University’s Medical School, joined forces to fight the sugar in a new paper.

According to the new results, a diet high in fructose may hamper immune function really bad. The reason?

The team’s findings

Fructose is known as a type of sugar found in processed foods, soda, and, of course, sweets. 

Scientists discovered that fructose could threaten a lot the immune system by producing more reactive molecules than necessary, related to inflammation.

Inflammation is actually a natural biological response to an intruder and could range from a splinter to a pathogen, and things could become deadly. But how inflammation work?

To initiate healing, our bodies can release an inflammatory response to fight. So, when our bodies do that, we’re also in danger. We might have to face many health issues if not adequately addressed.

How can we reduce inflammation?

So, how can we avoid possible threatening situations? It’s actually easier than you might think. 

Cutting your fructose intake and, of course, the processed foods can help a lot! 

Sydney Greene, MS, RD, released a statement discussing the danger we might face if we don’t change our diet. She explained:

“Processed foods, with their high sugar levels, omega-6 fatty acids, excess sodium ad junky additives, can stoke the fire of inflammation; [such a thing] taxes the immune system leaving us more susceptible to disease and illness.”
