Fire can be an unpredictable conflagration. It can start small, suddenly spreading to entire sections of a building or even affecting large sections of a city as it spreads rapidly up and down steep hillsides. In Notre-Dame de Paris on 15 April 2019, the conflagration was so intense that portions of the roof of the cathedral were totally destroyed, collapsing the spire and revealing debris underneath. Now, more than two years after the incident, we have a date for the grand reopening of the cathedral. Unfortunately, we will have to wait until 2024 for it.
More than years after the catastrophic fire which has devastated major portions of the 850-year century edifice, the Notre Dame Cathedral will be reopened to the public in 2024, as the building has been fully protected. The public organization charged for conserving and restoring the cathedral declared in a statement that the safeguard was done on time.
“That means that we’re officially saying that the cathedral is now saved, that it’s solid on its pillars, that its walls are solid. We’ll be able to firmly go ahead with the phase of restoring and rebuilding the parts destroyed by the fire, so that it’s ready to reopen for services and public visits in 2024,” General Jean-Louis Georgelin declared.
As per the body overseeing the activities, reconstruction will commence in the following months.
Even though a lengthy examination has not found a definite cause for the fire, investigators claimed that either a cigarette or an electrical failure might have caused it. During the coronavirus pandemic last year, construction on safeguarding the Cathedral was briefly stopped and efforts were carried out to clean the lead area prior to construction restarted in June 2020.
“We will rebuild Notre Dame, because that’s what the French people are expecting. Because that’s what our history is worthy of. Because that’s our deep destiny.” declared Macron back in 2019.
