As part of its strategy to become a dominant force in the video gaming sector, streaming giant Netflix has revealed that it plans to release an additional forty video games before the year 2023 comes to a close. Since late 2021, the corporation, which has over 200 million subscribers globally, has been providing games to its users through its mobile app at no additional charge ever since late 2021. To this day, Netflix has released a total of 55 games, some of which include Immortality and Into The Breach. Also, the company has produced spin-offs of several of its most successful television shows, such as “Too Hot To Handle.” Netflix is increasing its investment in gaming despite the fact that it currently has 70 games in production with external partners and 16 games in development with its own internal studios.
According to Leanne Loombe, Vice President of External Games for Netflix, the company’s objective is to develop into a “world-class publisher” that provides “must-play games” for its millions of subscribers all over the world. In addition to the publisher Ubisoft, with which Netflix currently has a partnership, Loombe claims that the company has plans to collaborate with both independent and large-scale publishers. Netflix has tried to promote some games by using QR codes, which direct TV viewers to download the games in question. According to Loombe, the company is still growing and learning about its users.
The investment in gaming that Netflix has made is a substantial move; but, other digital and entertainment titans who have committed to the industry have not been successful in gaining traction. For instance, as a result of the company’s lack of success in the gaming industry, Google dismantled both its game-streaming network and its game studios. But, Netflix is banking on the fact that its enormous subscriber base, in conjunction with the fact that it provides users with access to a variety of games at no additional cost, will help it achieve success in this sector.
