Meta (Facebook) Delays Plans to Bring End-to-End Encryption for Its Messaging Apps

Meta, the company formerly known as Facebook, continues to have ambitious plans for the future of its apps. Perhaps everybody knows that WhatsApp has the end-to-end (E2E) encryption for a pretty long time. But the other apps of Meta, such as Messenger and Instagram, lack the feature.

What’s for sure is that a lot of users would want to see end-to-end encryption for Instagram and Messenger as well, and Meta knows that very well. Since satisfying their customers is a priority, the company is planning to make the feature available for the rest of its apps as well.

Meta/Facebook delays adding the E2E encryption until 2023

According to The Hacker News, Meta will delay its plans of bringing the E2E encryption functionality for Messenger and Instagram until 2023.

Antigone Davis, who is the head of safety of Meta, declared as quoted by The Telegraph:

We’re taking our time to get this right and we don’t plan to finish the global rollout of end-to-end encryption by default across all our messaging services until sometime in 2023.

The goal of bringing E2E encryption for Instagram and Messenger is not surprising at all.  Back in 2019, CEO Mark Zuckerberg said that the “future of communication will increasingly shift to private, encrypted services where people can be confident what they say to each other stays secure and their messages and content won’t stick around forever.”

Recently, Facebook changed its name to Meta in an attempt to indicate the plans including the so-called metaverse – a hypothesized iteration of the internet where 3D virtual environments should play a much bigger role than before.
