WhatsApp Brings Video and Voice Calls for All Users of the Desktop App

WhatsApp users have manifested plenty of complaints about the instant messaging app in the last months. However, there will always be people saying things like ‘every piece of software has its haters’, and you know what? They’re totally right! But that doesn’t mean we must accept anything an app throws at us.

Besides the well-known fuss regarding sending user data to the parent company Facebook, there are also other reasons why WhatsApp was still not the main choice for people willing to video call and text each other. One of those reasons was represented by the inability of the desktop version of the app to execute video and voice calls to other users. But according to The Verge, that just changed.

Video and voice calls for PC and Mac users

Starting today, March 4, WhatsApp implements the possibility for all users to make video and voice calls directly from the desktop version of the app. The idea is not new at all, as the instant messaging app brought the same feature in late 2020, but only for a small group of users.

But don’t get so excited too fast! One big disadvantage of the video calling feature for the desktop version of WhatsApp is that there’s no group calling function available yet. We can hope that the very popular feature will be implemented as well in the future, but until that moment, we can just use our smartphones for group calls. According to Livemint.com, WhatsApp officials wrote on Twitter the following:

Sometimes you just need a little more space. Secure and reliable, end-to-end encrypted voice and video calls are now available on our desktop app.

As end-to-end encryption is one of the most important aspects of WhatsApp, it was practically impossible for it to not be added to video and voice calls via PC, as well. And of course, we have to take their word for it.
