Vitamin C Can Have These Side Effects: What Should You Know

Boosting our immune system and protecting ourselves from Covid-19 are now our main interests. Also, choosing to take supplements can do wonders. However, we should be careful.

The supplements can turn out to be the worst scenario ever for our immune system if not used properly. For example, Vitamin C is one of the most preferred and best immune-boosters, but it has its side effects, too.

Overdosing on this vitamin can seriously damage our well-being and more. So, be careful and start to take some precautions.

Digestive Problems

Too much vitamin C can also lead to severe digestive distress. It might cause acid reflux, nausea, or diarrhea.

Follow your doctor’s recommendation, and take no more than 2,000mg of vitamin C at once (the tolerable upper limit/day).

Kidney Stones

Even our kidneys can be affected by taking too much vitamin C! According to Dr David Hernandez, a professor and urologist at the University of South Florida, vitamin C should come from our diets.

“[…] supplemented vitamin C at doses more than a gram a day, […] can increase your risk for stones because of the effect of the oxalate levels in your urine increasing,” explained Dr Hernandez.

Damage Major Organs

Vitamin C enhances iron absorption, but an overdose could lead to iron overload. Your heart, pancreas, liver, thyroid, and even central nervous system could suffer a lot if you take over 2000mg/day of vitamin C.

Also, iron overload is most likely to happen if you have certain medical conditions, such as hemochromatosis (a hereditary condition).

Remember that a balanced diet of lean meats, vegetables, and fruits can offer you enough vitamin C. This method is natural and highly recommended.
