The CDC Investigates Concerning Outbreak of Meningococcal Disease

Pretty much anybody can become infected with meningococcal disease, and it spreads relatively easily from person to person through close or lengthy contact. However, a recent outbreak occurred among gay and bisexual men in Florida, and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) is investigating, according to The Hill.

Twenty-four cases of infections with the disease were found in the recent outbreak, while six people already died because of the illness.

Vaccination is the key

The symptoms of meningococcal disease can be very unpleasant, as the list includes a dark purple rash, high fever, headaches, vomiting, and more. The person who’s having such symptoms should seek medical service as soon as possible.

Because of the outbreak in Florida, and the number of Pride events being held across the state in coming weeks, it’s important that gay and bisexual men who live in Florida get vaccinated, and those traveling to Florida talk to their healthcare provider about getting a MenACWY vaccine.

Finding a vaccine for meningococcal disease isn’t hard at all. People can get one from different sources. They can simply pick it up from the pharmacy. If they’re not fans of going there, they can also get the vaccine from the community health center, their doctor’s office, or the local health department.

Meningococcal disease can lead to bloodstream infection and meningitis. Both of these conditions can be fatal for the patient.
