The first full moon rises tonight, called January’s Wolf Moon. On January 6, the moon will be on the far side of Earth and most distant from the sun, making a “micromoon.” The full moon will be visible for most of the night. The Wolf Moon will be in the Gemini constellation.
Find out more about tonight’s full moon.
Aphelion is an astronomical arrangement, and the moon will be around 91.6 million miles from the sun. Meanwhile, Earth’s distance from the sun is about 91.4 million miles from our star.
This situation makes the Wolf Moon of 2023 a micromoon, the opposite of a supermoon, which means the moon is closer to the Earth. It is different in how bright and large the moon appears, and it is so small that it is hard to see to the naked eye. The Wolf Moon came to light, and it was seen at times of the year when wolves could be yowl outside villages due to hunger.
Other names for January’s full moon are Old Moon, Frost Moon, Snow Moon, and all of which arise from Native American traditions. The name Snow Moon is more associated with February’s full moon, which will happen on February 5, 2023.
If you are new to skywatching, the best options to see are the best binoculars or telescopes.
Full moons happen when the moon is precisely on the opposite side of the Earth from the sun. The moon looks illuminated because we see the sun’s light reflected; its rotation is the same as its orbital period. Also, we always see the same face as our satellite world.
Stay tuned for more information about the space world. Also, enjoy the viewing tonight at the Wolf Moon!
