Samsung Struggles to Build Dustproof Foldable Phones, Says the Company’s Chief

Samsung has a difficult time trying to build foldable phones that feature dustproof protection. It’s not us saying it; it’s the company itself. Despite the general expectations of the public, the new Galaxy Z Fold5 and Flip5 foldable devices of Samsung did not come with dust protection alongside water ingress protection.

Samsung’s mobile boss, TM Roh, confirmed that the company is diligently working to address this problem for foldable smartphones, as they are well aware of consumer demand for such a feature. Developing dust proofing for foldables poses significant challenges due to their complex design with flexible components and moving parts in the hinge, as GSMArena reveals.

Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 5 is one hell of a phone, though

Despite lacking dustproof, the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 5 boasts impressive specs and features. The phone comes equipped with a foldable Dynamic AMOLED 2X display with a 120Hz refresh rate and HDR10+ support, spanning 7.6 inches. The secondary cover display measures 6.2 inches and also offers a 120Hz refresh rate, while also being protected by Corning Gorilla Glass Victus 2. Under the hood, the phone runs on Android 13 with One UI 5.1.1, powered by the robust Qualcomm SM8550-AC Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 chipset built on 4 nm process technology. Its processing capabilities include an octa-core CPU featuring 1×3.36 GHz Cortex-X3, 2×2.8 GHz Cortex-A715, 2×2.8 GHz Cortex-A710, and 3×2.0 GHz Cortex-A510 cores.

As for the memory options, the phone offers multiple possible choices: 256GB or 512GB, or an ample 1TB, all coupled with 12GB of RAM. The camera setup comprises a versatile triple rear system with a 50 MP wide lens, a 10 MP telephoto lens with 3x optical zoom, as well as a 12 MP ultrawide lens. The main camera comes featuring LED flash, HDR, and panorama, while it’s capable of capturing stunning videos at 8K@24fps, 4K@60fps, and 1080p@60/240fps (gyro-EIS). When it comes to selfies, the phone features a discreet under-display 4 MP camera and a cover camera with 10 MP capabilities, both supporting HDR and recording videos at 4K@30/60fps and 1080p@30/60fps with gyro-EIS.

Roh remains optimistic, drawing parallels with how water resistance was eventually added to Samsung’s foldables after a few generations, setting a new standard. He urged the public to remain patient as they strive to achieve dust proofing excellence, promising a similar progression in this area.
