Netflix Is Developing Its Own Cloud Games Ecosystem

It would appear that Netflix is hard at work developing a “cloud gaming service” to complement the mobile content it already provides. Back in November 2021, Netflix launched their Netflix Games App, which had a total of five different games. These included two different iterations of the Stranger Things video game series—Stranger Things: 1984 and Stranger Things 3: The Game—along with Card Blast, Teeter Up, and Shooter Hoops. According to a source, the app currently provides access to 18 different titles; but, by the time 2022 is over, that number could reach as high as 50.

A new job description, on the other hand, gives the impression that Netflix may also be embarking on a “cloud gaming service” comparable to Xbox Game Pass or PlayStation Now. The organization is looking to hire an experienced software engineer with a concentration in renderer engineering. However, according to the research, less than one percent of Netflix users are actually participating the games that are included with the service that streams movies and television shows.

The job announcement reads:

Bring your passion for games and joy of enabling others as we build our games experience. We are rapidly expanding new gaming offerings, so we are seeking a rendering engineer who is excited to help us lead the continued building and scaling of our efforts for our international audience.
We are looking for a rendering engineer to support our cloud gaming service.  In this role, you will help optimize the rendering of games so we can render multiple games on our cloud gaming appliances. You will also assist with the development of SDKs to enable game developers to succeed in writing high-quality games for the Netflix cloud games ecosystem.
Netflix claims that they empower their employees with the autonomy to execute, learn, and pivot, as well as the obligation to be self-directed, collaborative, and perceptive in their work. This provides the individual with the autonomy necessary to produce their highest quality work and to make a significant contribution to the overall success of the company.
