LG’s New Camera Upgrade is a Must For Some Smartphones

A periscope-style real optical zoom camera module with a 4–9 times telephoto range has just been announced by the company’s LG Innotek division. How could this thing upgrade a smartphone?

That might potentially result in a decrease in the size and quantity of modules needed while enabling smartphone cameras to maintain complete picture quality across the whole zoom range. Quite impressive!

Moreover, LG and Qualcomm collaborated to include the technology in the new Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 Mobile Platform.

Here’s what LG said:

It will enhance the image tuning custom for the optics, which includes Auto-Focus, Auto-Exposure, Auto-White Balance, lens shading correction, and much more. Users will be able to focus quickly. And the photos and videos will have stunning image quality.

To get a picture of such a camera upgrade, you should know that most smartphone cameras utilize hybrid zoom systems, which couple digital zoom with several camera modules.

And that works by using certain zoom ranges that employ separate cameras (usually 2x, 3x, 10x) and digital zoom to fill in the gaps between those (2.5x, 4.5x). How’s that working for the final product?

As a result, detail and sensor resolution may both be significantly diminished.

Starting on January 3rd, 2023, smartphones shown at CES will include the upgraded camera. Although LG didn’t mention any brands or specific models, it may be found in a number of upcoming smartphones that have the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 CPU, like Motorola X40, OnePlus 11 series, Xiaomi 13, and Oppo Find X.
