The Covid-19 mRNA vaccine Pfizer BioNTech has been used in many countries, and for some, it is their first option. Some reasons behind the popularity are the new mRNA technology, the fact that most countries recognize it and facilitate traveling, the few side effects. The pharmaceutical company behind it has submitted reports to health regulators worldwide, including the FDA. Back in August, FDA fully authorized the Covid-19 Pfizer vaccine.
A new briefing published by the FDA says that the doses used for vaccinating children aged 5 to 11 produce robust antibodies against the virus. Furthermore, the FDA concluded that the benefits outweigh potential risks, such as heart inflammation. Back in June, health officials reported cases of myocarditis, known as inflammation of the heart, among teenagers. Most of them experienced the side effect after their second dose of the mRNA Covid-19 vaccine. Although the cases were few, statistics showed myocarditis was more common in young male adults than females.
Pfizer’s data showed that the mRNA vaccine is more than 90% effective for this age group. Children ages 5 to 11 will receive a third of the dose used for those 12 and older. This lower dosage is meant to minimize any side effects. Although the FDA revised the data involving Covid-19 child vaccination, the health regulator will ask independent advisers to vote on the authorization and safety of the Pfizer Covid-19 vaccine.
If the panel of independent health experts votes for the authorization of the Pfizer Covid-19 vaccine, then the CDC would soon release a set of recommendations. The additional recommendations might include advice on who among children ages 5 to 11 should receive the first dose in the first few weeks. Most likely, children with a weaker immune system will have priority. If the vaccination process for children aged 5 to 11 begins in November, some children can receive their second dose before Christmas.
