Apple Watch to Get Upgraded Smart Home Control with Gesture-Based Interaction

Apple has just recently submitted a patent application that describes in detail how it intends to improve the Apple Watch’s ability to control various smart home devices. Not only will the watch be able to support IoT and Matter-ready accessories, but it will also be able to support HomePod speakers and Apple TV in the immediate area, functioning similarly to a TV remote controller.

The application reveals that the Apple Watch will have a camera as well as a dedicated chip that will provide a view of the smartwatch’s interface that is similar to how it would appear in real life. After that, a user can select a device to control by pointing the watch toward the device where gesture-specific controls are projected. This allows the user to select the device they want to control.

For instance, one can adjust the brightness of a lamp by squeezing the area between one’s index finger and thumb. On the other hand, the HomePod speaker will have a playback control on the watch that is analogous to the expanded finger gesture. Users can also interact with the watch by pausing or playing a track by using different combinations of their hands and fingers, and the watch’s sensors will read these gestures.

It’s interesting to note that Google’s concept and Apple’s remote control patent for the watch are quite similar. The search giant is mulling over whether or not it would be better to control a pair of smart reality glasses with a smartwatch or a Pixel Watch rather than with home devices. However, it is difficult to predict which technological advancement will become widespread first.Apple has also alluded, in a separate filing, to the possibility of a gesture-based volume control for the AirPods.

It would appear that the Cupertino-based company sees a great deal of potential in the way that wearables could eventually replace smartphones or, at the very least, begin with a few fundamental functions. The new patent suggests that the Apple Watch’s role in controlling a smart home will be expanded beyond basic commands to enable more intuitive and user-friendly interaction with smart devices. This highlights the company’s commitment to innovation and providing users with experiences that are seamless.
